I think you should put the plugin in /usr/share/emesene/plugins_base/, maybe that's the problem

Even if doing that you get the error, if you launch emesene from a terminal you should one line: Sound plugin couldn't be initialized (or something like that Tongue )
Above this line there should be a python traceback, post it here

It's the first option in the connection tab in preferences

The problem is:

Plugin plugins_base.Sound could not be initialized
Reason: playbin
The connect operation timed out

I don't know if it's because you have to install some package else or update emesene.
Are you using svn? And do you have python-gst installed?

I would say that you're missing some gstreamer package. These are the packages I have installed here and the Sound plugin works fine:

Code:
gstreamer0.10 0.10.15-1
gstreamer0.10-alsa 0.10.15-1
gstreamer0.10-base 0.10.15-1
gstreamer0.10-gconf 0.10.6-1
gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs 0.10.15-1
gstreamer0.10-good 0.10.6-1
gstreamer0.10-mad 0.10.6-1
gstreamer0.10-ogg 0.10.15-1
gstreamer0.10-python 0.10.9-1
gstreamer0.10-ugly 0.10.6-3
gstreamer0.10-vorbis 0.10.15-1
